Description

A comforting and hearty cabbage roll casserole with layers of tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, rice, and tomato sauce baked to perfection.


Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook rice according to package instructions and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. In a large pot, boil chopped cabbage in salted water for 5 minutes, then drain well.
  7. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half the cabbage, then half the beef mixture, then half the rice. Repeat layers.
  8. Pour beef broth evenly over the casserole.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes.
  11. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese on top before the final bake.
