Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl.
  3. In large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, food coloring, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until fully combined.
  5. Roll tablespoon-sized dough balls in powdered sugar until heavily coated.
  6. Place dough balls 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
  7. Bake 10-12 minutes until cookies spread and crackle surface forms.
  8. Cool on baking sheets 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks.

Notes

Tips: For extra crackles, roll dough balls in powdered sugar twice. Substitution: Use gluten-free 1:1 flour for gluten-free version. Storage: Keep in airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
