Ingredients

  • 8 cups 1-inch cubes day-old French bread
  • 1/2 cup raisins (if desired)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Whipped cream for serving (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Grease the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  3. Add bread cubes and raisins (if using) to the bowl. Gently stir until all bread is coated with custard mixture.
  4. Transfer mixture to prepared slow cooker, spreading evenly.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours or until set (edges should be golden and center should spring back when touched).
  6. Serve warm topped with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Tip: For plumper raisins, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes before adding.
Substitutions: Use brioche or challah instead of French bread. Dried cranberries work well instead of raisins.
Storage: Keep leftovers refrigerated in airtight container for 3-4 days. Reheat individual portions in microwave.
