- 1 cup tomato paste
- ½ cup maple syrup
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 2 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tsp liquid smoke
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan and whisk until smooth.
- Bring mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently.
- Reduce heat to low and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
- Taste and adjust seasonings – add more maple syrup for sweetness or vinegar for tang.
- Remove from heat and let cool completely before transferring to an airtight container.
Notes
Tips: Sauce thickens as it cools. For spicier version, increase cayenne pepper.
