Description
A creamy, delicious banana pudding made with layers of vanilla wafers, ripe bananas, and a rich homemade vanilla custard. Perfect for gatherings, potlucks, or a comforting homemade treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups whole milk
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 large egg yolks
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 box (11 oz) vanilla wafers
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream (for topping)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
- Gradually add milk, whisking constantly over medium heat until thickened.
- In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks. Slowly add a small amount of hot milk mixture to temper the eggs, then stir back into the saucepan.
- Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly, then remove from heat.
- Stir in vanilla extract and butter until smooth. Let cool slightly.
- In a dish, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and pudding. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
- In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread over pudding.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.
Notes
- Best served chilled for at least 4 hours, but overnight is ideal.
- Can substitute store-bought whipped topping for homemade whipped cream.
- To prevent banana slices from browning, lightly coat them with lemon juice.
