Description

Creamy, dreamy Southern-style banana pudding with layers of vanilla custard, fresh bananas, and buttery vanilla wafers. This no-bake dessert is a crowd-pleaser and perfect for potlucks!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 (11 oz) box vanilla wafers
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream (optional, for topping)
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar (optional, for whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. Make the custard: In a medium saucepan, whisk egg yolks, cornstarch, sugar, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk.
  2. Cook: Over medium heat, stir constantly until thickened (8-10 mins). Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.
  3. Layer: In a trifle dish, alternate vanilla wafers, banana slices, and warm custard. Repeat layers.
  4. Chill: Refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight).
  5. Serve: Top with whipped cream (if using) and extra wafers.

Notes

  • Make-ahead: Pudding thickens more as it chills.
  • Banana browning: Toss slices in lemon juice to prevent oxidation.
  • Substitutions: Use gluten-free wafers for GF version.
