Juicy, saucy sloppy joe mixture served on sweet Hawaiian rolls with melted cheddar cheese for a fun, kid-friendly twist on a classic.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ½ cup red bell pepper finely diced
  • ½ cup green bell pepper finely diced
  • ½ cup onion finely diced
  • 2 cups bbq sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 12 slices cheddar cheese
  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • Sesame seeds optional topping
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef, breaking it up and cooking until browned.
  2. Drain excess fat, then stir in garlic, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and onion; cook until softened.
  3. Add brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, chili powder, and BBQ sauce; simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Season the mixture with salt and pepper, then spoon it onto the bottom halves of the Hawaiian rolls.
  5. Top each with a slice of cheddar cheese.
  6. Place the roll tops on and brush the tops with melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle sesame seeds if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of smoked paprika to the sauce.
